That's me! My friends call me James.
I'm interested in dog training, urbanism, architecture, the electrification of civilization, green energy, human language, human social organization, philosophy, Free and Open Source Software (with special attention to GNU Guix, GNU Emacs, and GNU/Linux desktop environment software), self-hosted "homelab" services, & numerous other things.
In 2014 I started studying computer science at the University of Alberta. In 2018 I went to work in R&D at an international telecom company via the recommendation by one of my professors. I worked in a compiler lab doing research using neural networks to automatically tune various compiler performance metrics (runtime, binary size, etc.). I authoured a mini-paper on my work and presented the culmination of it at HPCaML'19 in Washington D.C., a (new at the time, in 2019) CGO workshop. Learning a tonne on the job and losing some interest in pure academia, I never came back to finish my undergraduate degree. When I left that company I decided to try and forge my own path and I've been on that journey ever since. I spent my time indendependently deepening my programming knowledge while fiddling around in the FOSS world. I even tried my hand at making educational videos at one point. Eventually, I joined a tech startup called (defun games ()) as co-founder and COO. Naturally, with our small team and little executive duties, I was mainly writing code. We later rebranded to (defun ai ()) upon a pivot in strategy. Sadly, there was little capital to go around in the tech investment space at that time and we were unable to find funding before a deadline I had set for myself. So after about two and a half years of startup life, I left (defun ai ()) with the thought of going back to school and learning something different. I considered studying urban planning or architecture but I decided to be more hands-on and learn a trade to satisfy my interest in building and electrification. So here I am now, an electrician in training! I've just finished my 1st period schooling at NAIT and I'm looking for a sponsor, hire me!
