Word of Mouth

Human-made stuff is being overrun here on the internet. Bots and AI spew out slop while algorithms are optimized to capture our attention. But there are still plenty of authentic humans sharing their knowledge and creativity on the internet—if you know where to look. I find that word of mouth is still king when it comes to discovering quality content. Someone you trust recommends someone they trust.

With that said, here are some of the people & projects I recommend checking out:

• Andrew Tropin — Legendary Guix hacker and author of RDE.
• Andy Wingo — A master in all things Scheme and long-time contributor to Guile Scheme. His blog offers technical deep dives into his FOSS work.
• David Thompson — Another giant in the Scheme community and the author of this site's static site generator (Haunt)!
• David Wilson of System Crafters — A pillar of the Guile Scheme/GNU Guix community. Many schemers congregate during his livestreams.
• GNU Emacs — The enthusiast's tool for everything text.
• GNU Guix — A powerful, declarative operating system and package manager.
• Jason Slaughter of NotJustBikes — The orange pill.
• Justine Underhill — A journalist and city council member (Falls Church, VA, USA) who makes wonderful videos on housing & urbanism.
• Kev Polk of Edinicity — A permaculture urbanist with well-thought-out ideas about the future of our civil structures.
• Libera Chat — The de facto standard IRC server. My favourite channels: #emacs, #guix, #guile, #nonguix, #spritely, #systemcrafters, #tropin.
• Louis Rossmann — Probably the world's most prolific Right to Repair advocate. Also an electronics repair technician.
• Nate Schoemer — A great dog trainer with amazing resources accessible online.
• Oh The Urbanity! — Nuanced urbanism backed by level-headed reasoning.
• Protesilaos Stavrou — Long time Emacs contributor who lives and breathes FOSS principles.
• Ray Delahanty of City Nerd — Dry humour, census data, urbanism "top tens". Fun fact: I'm barely out-of-frame in one of his videos...
• Sam Harris — A bit of everything: philosophy, mindfulness, spirituality, [typically US or global] politics. Honestly attempts to uncover truths and think thoroughly, but is both loved and hated for the resulting opinions.
• Taylor Lunt — A programmer friend of mine who has an interesting blog with talks about books, technology, and even his own short stories and poetry. A better writer than me by miles.
• Alec Watson of Technology Connections — Not interested in dishwashers? You will be.
• The Aesthetic City — Making the case for beauty in our urban environments. In my opinion, aesthetics have some seriously important ramifications.
• The Spritely Institute — Scheme, distributed programming, object capability security, and other cool stuff happening here!
